If you discover you carry a mutation in the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene, don't panic. Pick up the phone and call your doctor. Make an appointment to get more information about the breast cancer gene. Having the gene does not mean you will get cancer. There are preventive measures you can take, such as taking tamoxifen (a preventive drug) or having your breasts removed. These are radical steps, and should be carefully considered. You may find that early screening procedures, including MRIs (which can be done at a younger age than traditional mammograms). Educate yourself about your risks and your options. Even if you do get breast cancer, remember that it's a highly treatable disease, especially if found early.
