What Causes Breast Cancer?
Non-Preventable Risk Factors for Breast Cancer
The causes of breast cancer may be many and varied. Some risk factors are beyond a woman's control. If your first menstrual period came early, or if menopause comes late, your risk may be increased. If a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt or other female family member has or had this disease, you are more likely to get it. Caucasians have a higher risk than African Americans, Asians, Hispanics or Native Americans. The risk of breast cancer increases with age. A woman's risk is significantly higher than a man's, although men do get breast cancer in much smaller numbers. These risk factors are beyond your control, but knowing them should make you more conscientious about screening. No one knows precisely what causes breast cancer but there are many ways to prevent it.
