Breast Cancer Prevention and Concerns about Children
Many women worry about the affect their breast cancer will have on their children, born or unborn. Women with young children can be paralyzed by the fear of leaving them motherless. If your children are grown, you may worry that they will inherit your cancer. And if you have not yet started your family, you may question the wisdom of having children at all. Remember that having multiple children early in life seems to help prevent breast cancer. If you have children and have gotten a diagnosis of breast cancer, sit down and talk with your children, no matter what age they are. Children will sense that something is happening in the family, and even very young children will be better off to know rather than being kept in the dark. Children can be a tremendous support system during treatment. And if they know that their risk may be higher, they may be more apt to take the steps to reduce that risk in themselves.
