Learn About Preventing Breast Cancer
Certain Medications May Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer
There are drugs available that may prevent you from ever getting breast cancer. Tamoxifen is probably the most familiar. It's often prescribed after breast cancer treatment and is believed to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer in the first place. Just be aware that there are no guarantees. Tamoxifen is controversial when used for prevention, as it has potential side effects including blood clots and increased risk of other cancers. You may want to have genetic testing to more closely determine your risk prior to starting preventive drug therapy. You should also discuss your options with at least one doctor, in order to accurately assess the risks and potential benefits and make the best choice for you.
