About Stage IV Breast Cancer
In Stage IV breast cancer, the cancer has metastasized, or traveled to other parts of the body. Breast cancer typically metastasizes to the bones, lungs, brain or liver. It isn't always possible to remove Stage IV cancer through surgery. A mastectomy may still be necessary in order to remove the source of the cancer, but your doctor will likely order chemotherapy as well. Chemotherapy is a systematic treatment to find and destroy cancer cells throughout the body. Familiarizing yourself with chemotherapy and its effects will make it seem less intimidating. Ask your doctor any questions you have about comfort and convenience during treatment. Try to maintain normalcy as much as possible and seek to minimize the unpleasant side effect and symptoms as much as you can. Remember, there's no relationship between how much you suffer and how effective the treatment will be.
